Collaborative Law

Another area in which I have expertise is the field of Collaborative Law, which is a legal process for couples who have separated or intend to end their marriage.  Rather than going through the court system (which can be both expensive and emotionally exhausting) Collaborative Law is a team approach.  The couple, their lawyers, and other professionals work together to come to the best possible resolution of the relationship in the hopes that relations will remain intact to serve the best interest of the family system.

Mental Health Professionals work with the Collaborative Team to help facilitate the difficult emotions that arise as part of the divorce process.  Divorce can be one of life’s most painful experiences  and the negative emotions that are common can interfere with this life transition.

As a neutral mental health professional that works in the collaborative process, I meet with the couple (together and  separately).  My role is to help both parties prepare for the team meetings to help make them as productive as possible.  I help both parties manage complex emotions with the goal being the best possible dissolution of the relationship.  When there are children involved, it is in their best interest to dissolve the marriage in as respectful a way as possible and many couples can benefit (emotionally and financially) by keeping their divorce out of litigation.
